April in Seattle brings longer days that inspire us to open the windows and reset our spaces. However, before you fill donation bags or head to the curb, try a different approach for Earth Day: focus less on getting rid of items and more on reducing what actually leaves your home.
Cut down on waste while creating a lighter, more organized space with these tips:
- The Pause Rule: Before tossing an item, consider if it can be repurposed. A worn t-shirt can become a cleaning rag, or an empty jar can serve as new storage.
- Rethink the Donation Pile: Donation isn’t always a solution for worn-out or incomplete items. Try passing these directly to neighbors or local groups to ensure they are used.
- Reuse Zone: Designate a specific spot for jars, bags, and packing materials. A dedicated system turns clutter into a resource.
- Make It Easy to Use What You Have: Keep everyday items visible and accessible to avoid buying duplicates.
- Create a Repair Spot: Use a designated bin for items that need mending or fixing so they actually get a second life.
- Edit Before You Buy: Take inventory of what you own. Using up your current supplies is the simplest way to reduce waste.
A lighter home doesn’t have to result in bags of trash. Often, it just means using what you already have more intentionally.
